Health and Community Services Program - a part of Skilling the Bay

This program, delivered in partnership with the Geelong Region Local Learning and Employment Network (GRLLEN) provides students with industry immersion experiences, including VETDSS, SBAT and SWL opportunities to increase their awareness of the diverse careers and pathways available in the Health and Community Services (H&CS) sector. The program incorporates participation in The Gordon Future Health Skills digital course modules delivered over the school year alongside industry visits and panel discussions.

  • The full program is designed for Year 10 students
  • Gain an understanding of the diverse careers (clinical and non-clinical) in the Health & Community Services sector in the region.
  • Hear the career journeys from health and community experts: how they got there and what do they do
  • Five modules including face-to-face, online workshops and industry tours.

Aims of the program

  • To inspire and engage Year 10 and 11 students in the world of work and to raise awareness of post-school pathways opportunities.
  • To raise awareness and knowledge of the diverse careers and roles (clinical and non-clinical) available within the region’s H&CS sector.
  • To improve students’ knowledge of employability skills and how these are transferable to any industry.
  • Promoting and supporting entry-level training pathways for careers in the H&CS sector, particularly to disadvantaged cohorts.

Twelve industry partners have been engaged in the delivery of the program including Barwon Health, Epworth Geelong, St John of God, Barwon Child, Youth and Family (BCYF), Scope, genU and Ambulance Victoria. 

Program highlights

Students who participate in the program will complete a number of learning and awareness-raising activities including:

  • Hearing from employees, experts and industry leaders in various occupations who have successfully pursued a career in the H&CS sector, about their career journeys and day-to-day job requirements in the sector.
  • Having the opportunity to discuss with and ask questions of industry experts who will motivate and inform career choices.
  • Exploring TAFE and University pathway options.
  • Visiting key industry settings and workplaces.
  • Participating in Future Health Skills online micro-credentials and receiving digital badges acknowledging their competencies.

Program format

Up to 70 students from various schools in the Geelong region will participate in five modules which are the key program elements from March to June 2023. There is an expectation that students will complete all five modules to experience the full career benefits of the program.

Module 1

Workshop  - Introduction to Health & Community Services with networking activities, industry panel and enrolment into Future Health Skills.

Module 2

Future Health Skills Microcredentials online module to be completed remotely.

Module 3

Tours of The Gordon TAFE nursing simulation areas and VFA teaching areas.

Module 4

Site tours at either the McKellar Centre, Barwon Health, Cardiac Services, Barwon Health or Epworth Health.

Module 5

Deakin University tour of School of Health & Sports Science, VR and Nyaal Theatre activity. Lunch and graduation at Waurn Ponds Estate.
Students who have an interest in Health and Community Services as a career pathway are encouraged to discuss participation in the program with their parents and careers teacher.

Important notes for schools:

  • The expectation is that students complete all modules in the World of Work programs.
  • The programs are capped for student numbers, and early registrations will take priority.
  • Students will need to make their own transport arrangements to and from the arranged meeting point per program, at the specified time which will be advised on confirmation of the student's registration.
  • Programs generally run between 9.30 am to 2.30pm.
  • May require commitment of a teaching resource from participating schools to attend/assist on tour days.
  • Schools can be subsidised CRT costs to enable a supervising teacher to attend.
