Immersion experience for schools in Government and Professional Services from Skilling the Bay

The World of Work program provides meaningful immersion experiences for senior secondary students in trending and growing industries in the Geelong region. With the significant presence of government and professional services industries in Geelong, STB, along with industry stakeholders, has identified the need to promote the varied and extensive career opportunities available within this sector.

  • Gain an understanding of the diverse careers available in the government and professional services sector.
  • Hear about the career journeys of workers in finance, marketing, management or operations
  • Activities include panels of speakers, round table discussions, tours of work areas
  • Half-day visits to organisations such as City of Greater Geelong, Barwon Water, The Gordon and more.

Government and professional services agencies provide a range of career entry points, and as well as highlighting education and training pathways into the industry, this program also seeks to highlight and promote entry-level roles that may be available through traineeships, apprenticeships and graduate programs.

Government and professional services partners currently include:

  • The City of Greater Geelong
  • Barwon Water
  • The Gordon

Aims of the program

  • To inspire and engage Year 10 and 11 students in the world of work and to raise awareness of post-school pathways opportunities.
  • To raise awareness of the extensive roles and careers available within the region's Government and Professional services organisations.

Program format

  • Students experience a variety of industry workplaces over four days.
  • Host organisations will provide an introduction and overview of the organisation, a panel of employees to discuss their career journey, opportunity for a group activity or roundtable discussions and a site tour of work areas.
  • A module runs for 1 day (between 9.30am and 2.30pm) with industry partners hosting a morning or afternoon session (2 to 2.5hrs duration).
