From Geelong to Lyon: Bon voyage, Trey!

2024-09-05

The Gordon hosts a good luck 'smoko' of croissants for Trey McAuley and his carpentry mates, before he heads off to compete at WorldSkills in Lyon, France.

The Gordon East Geelong Campus transformed into a little slice of France recently, as The Gordon’s carpentry cohort enjoyed a French-themed morning tea to wish Trey McAuley the best of luck, ahead of his journey to represent Australia as the nation’s sole carpentry competitor at the WorldSkills International competition in France next week.

Further to being an Apprentice of the Year finalist at the 2024 Victorian Training Awards last week, Trey has his sights firmly set on bringing home gold and doing his country proud.

Held in a carpentry workshop, the event featured croissants provided by The Culinary Collective. With French music setting the scene and Aussie flags adding a patriotic touch, alongside speeches made by CEO Joe Ormeno and carpentry teachers, it was a true celebration of both Trey's journey and his community's support.

“Trey is one of our brightest stars here at The Gordon. He is a role model and an inspiration. Bringing local excellence to the global stage, Trey's story is a real testament to the passion, dedication, and where education can lead”, Mr Ormeno said.

Trey’s fantastic practice project stood majestically illuminated under a spotlight, showcasing his exemplary skills and dedication to his trade.

Teacher Clayton Whitfield, commented that it’s not just Trey’s skill, but also his character, that has brought him so far.

“When WorldSkills’ selection for the Skillaroos team takes place, they look for someone with particular attributes. Someone who is willing to learn and devote time for practice. Someone who is self-motivated, can manage time, materials, and tasks, effectively. Someone who drills down into the why, not just the how. They look for someone who can persevere through challenges or setbacks, someone who takes ownership of their responsibilities and commitments, works well with others, and acts with integrity and honesty. Trey does all this”, he said.

Despite flying in the same morning from a WorldSkills competition in China, Trey closed the event with an impromptu speech, encouraging his peers with a message of hard work and dedication.

"Some people see Regional WorldSkills as a bit of an excuse to get a day off school. But if you prove yourself, and you perform well, you might get the chance to represent Victoria or make nationals. It's a great opportunity. You need to have the mindset of working hard and proving yourself.”
