Course description

This popular course will equip you with the knowledge and practical skills you need to register as an enrolled nurse or create a pathway to university. 

Our experienced team of trainers will teach you about anatomy and physiology, communication skills, medical terminology, infection control, legal and ethical issues associated with nursing, nursing patients with complex needs, administering medications, and nursing patients with mental health needs. Our partnerships with Barwon Health, St John of God Hospital, and other healthcare providers also provide excellent work placement and employment opportunities. 

This course is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Upon completing your studies, you will be eligible to register as an enrolled nurse with the NMBA.

Work placement/industry experience

400 hours of work placement is required in this course, organised by The Gordon.

  • You will complete 11 weeks of full-time placement, in 2-3 full-week blocks with a combination of both morning and afternoon shifts rostered.
  • Placement may occur during semester break. Placement is not paid work and students will not receive payment for undertaking practical placement.
  • You must obtain a current police check and a Working with Children Check and NDIS workers screening prior to commencing your placement.
  • The uniform is a Gordon top; blue pants and flat non-slip shoes should be worn.
  • *Please note that you may be required to travel outside of your usual training location to attend placement. This may include other regional areas or suburbs of Melbourne. Travel and accommodation costs are the responsibility of the student.
  • As per worker vaccination requirements all applicants for this course must be triple vaccinated (boosted) against COVID-19, Hepatitis B, Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP), Varicella, Measles mumps-rubella (MMR), Tuberculosis (TB) and current year influenza vaccination. Students are required to provide evidence of full vaccination status, including booster dose, as part of their placement documentation which is provided to placement facilities.

How often do I attend?

Classes are scheduled Monday – Friday | 3 days per week (changing each semester) | between the hours of 8.00am and 8.00pm.

Students can expect to be on campus on average 20 hours per week. Semester breaks will be scheduled into the timetable.

Course Delivery

The Diploma of Nursing is predominantly delivered face-to-face in the classroom, with some theoretical classes delivered online through the Zoom platform. The course is structured in this way due to the practical nature of nursing, with online classes to support the theoretically underpinning knowledge.

Entrance requirements

Academic:

Successful completion of Australian Year 12 or equivalent – Equivalents can be found on our Entry Requirements page.

  • Police and Working with Children check prior to placement
  • Computer skills
  • Up to date immunisation/vaccination record
  • Year 11 General Maths

English:

  • Formal evidence of an English language, literacy and numeracy test result prior to commencing the program. This documentation is to be submitted with your application. English language standards listed below.
  1. Declare English is their primary language – accepted countries Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States of America. 
  2. IELTS (academic module). We only accept test results:
    • from one test sitting, or
    • a maximum of two test sittings in a six month period only if:
      • you achieve a minimum overall score of 7 in each sitting, and
      • you achieve a minimum score of 7 in each component across the two sittings, and
      • no score in any component of the test is below 6.5
  3. OET. We will only accept test results:
    • from one test sitting, or
    • a maximum of two test sittings in a six month period only if:
      • you are tested in all four components in each sitting, and
      • you achieve a minimum score of B in each component across the two sittings, and
      • no score in any component of the test is below C.
  4. PTE Academic. We will only accept test results:
    • from one test sitting, or
    • a maximum of two test sittings in a six month period only if:
      • a minimum overall score of 65 is achieved in each sitting, and
      • you achieve a minimum score of 65 in each of the communicative skills across the two sittings, and
      • no score in any of the communicative skills is below 58 
  5. TOEFL iBT. We will only accept test results:
    • from one test sitting, or
    • a maximum of two test sittings in a six month period only if:
      • a minimum total score of 94 is achieved in each sitting, and you achieve a minimum score of 24 for listening, 24 for reading, 27 for writing and 23 for  speaking across the two sittings, and
      • no score in any of the sections is below:
        • 20 for listening
        • 19 for reading
        • 24 for writing, and
        • 20 for speaking


Tests must be completed within the past 2 years from applying for this course.

  • You must be 18 years or over at the time of course commencement.

Work placement requirements

  • Students are required to hold a current Working with Children Check. 
  • Students are required to provide a current Police check for the Year of Professional Experience Placement (PEP).
  • All students must obtain (at their own expense) or hold a valid NDIS workers screening check to be eligible to attend placement. 
  • Students are required to provide up-to-date vaccination records for PEP as per Industry requirements including Influenza and all boosters.
