Amber left hospitality to make a new start in the creative and very cool barbering industry. She’s now a Gordon apprentice, working at Grindstone Barbers.

We caught up with Amber and asked her what she liked about training at The Gordon.

"The Gordon is a pretty cruisy environment; I have the space to be myself, do my own thing, there is no pressure to conform or anything. Everyone is embraced differently."

Barbering is a creative industry and Amber enjoys the variety her daily job provides.

"I love barbering. No two days are the same and the clients are amazing. So many different people coming through the door, all with their own story, makes for some amazing conversation, even a few life lessons. It’s an excellent way to get to know your community."

The most rewarding aspect of Amber’s role as a barber is making others feel like a brand new person.

"Even a regular client getting the same haircut as always, seeing them leave feeling fresh and confident again always puts a smile on my face. As Anthony Hamilton states, “Being a barber is about taking care of the people.” When clients leave feeling like a million bucks, it’s just the best feeling for me."

Amber shared her advice for anyone thinking of taking on a barbering apprenticeship.

“Just do it! It seems really daunting at first, but it’s a lot of fun. And it’s a career that can be taken anywhere. I could pack up and move to the other side of the world tomorrow and I would find a job easily. That kind of stability and job security is becoming rarer and rarer in other fields, but barbering, as far as I can see, seems to be immune."
