Project advisory group members_clean economyThe Gordon has secured a Victorian Government grant to work with the advanced manufacturing industry to identify the sector's future clean economy training needs.

The $538,000 grant will facilitate The Gordon’s partnership with Geelong Manufacturing Council (GMC), the City of Greater Geelong, Skilling the Bay and Geelong Tech School to deliver a suite of projects that will prepare the local advanced manufacturing industry and education providers for new jobs and training needs to achieve a net zero emissions economy.

“The Victorian Government has committed to net zero emissions targets by 2045, which will drive significant investment into clean economy projects, products and solutions, creating demand for new jobs and training,” said Dr Yasmin Chalmers, Head of Centre for Science and Technology at The Gordon.

"Working with industry to identify and understand the jobs of the future and the training those jobs will need will prepare Geelong's growing advanced manufacturing sector for the future, improve partnerships between education and industry, and identify strategic opportunities," said Dr Chalmers.

The project to identify the training and upskilling needs of new and existing advanced manufacturing employees and equip them to work in the new clean economy will launch an industry needs analysis and develop a teacher industry immersion program, a graduate internship and a student work readiness program.

"The energy transition is perhaps the most significant challenge we will face as a society and economy over the next two decades," said Jennifer Conley, CEO of GMC.

"Understanding the exact nature of the skills required to meet this challenge successfully and the training required is critical. GMC congratulates the outstanding Gordon team on marshalling the resources to make this happen," continued Ms Conley.

The Gordon will be consulting with the local manufacturing sector via a series of workshops in mid-June and an online survey in early July.

Participants can choose to attend one of the following consultation workshops:

Workshop 1
9am-12pm, Thursday 15 June 2023
