Real life training and practical experience play a valuable role in VETDSS. Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) enables students to combine their hands-on experience with the theoretical knowledge gained through their TAFE education.
SWL is strongly recommended for all VCE VET programs, and in some cases, it is mandatory. Programs that have mandatory SWL do so because the qualification and/or unit/s of competency require work placement and/or require assessment to occur in the workplace.
Before commencing SWL, students must have undertaken workplace health and safety requirements of their VET Delivered to Secondary Students program.
SWL is typically organised as either one day per week during school terms or as a concentrated block during term breaks. The responsibility of finding suitable placements lies with the student, the secondary school, and the Local Learning and Employment Network. For programs with mandatory placements, it is essential to refer to The Gordon Work Placement / SWL Fact Sheet for guidance before arranging a placement.
