Allied Health Assistants support and assist the work of Allied Health Professionals. This course, providing accreditation at the Certificate IV level, includes theoretical and hands-on training to work under the supervision of health professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists and introduce pathways to supporting other allied health professionals.
The course subject areas include infection control, work health and safety, health conditions, interpreting and applying medical terminology, working with diversity, empowering and caring for people receiving support, taking clinical measurements, recognising and responding to behaviours of concern and assisting with an allied health program.
Students will train to work within a particular scope of practice and undertake tasks delegated by Allied Health Professionals, which may include the delivery of individual and/or group therapy programs, administrative duties, health equipment management and assisting clients with daily living activities.
Work environments may include hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, community health centres, schools, residential aged care services, private practices, and the disability sector.
The Gordon is responsible for organising the120 hours of work placement that is required to complete this course. Placement is not paid work and students will not receive payment for undertaking practical placement. Placement is usually in the Geelong area but you may be required to travel outside of your usual training location to attend placement. This may include other regional areas or suburbs of Melbourne. You will be required to obtain both a current police check and approved Working with Children’s Check. You will also be required to provide evidence of vaccination prior to commencing placement. As per worker vaccination requirements , all applicants for this course must be triple vaccinated (boosted) against COVID-19 prior to undertaking placement which is a requirement for completion of this course. Students are required to provide evidence of full vaccination status, including booster dose, as part of their placement documentation which is provided to placement facilities. Students that cannot provide valid evidence will not be able to complete placement and therefore unable to complete this course.
